Hematopathology, Transfusion Medicine, HLA Typing & Molecular Oncology Diagnostics Laboratory
As a Regional Discipline Head, Dr. Rutherford supports a strong team of laboratory physicians who have extensive practice experience and expertise in Transfusion Medicine, lab Hemostasis/Thrombosis, Malignant Hematopathology including Lymphoma Pathology, HLA-typing for transplantation programs and Molecular Oncology Diagnostic testing for solid tumours and hematologic malignancies.
His career working as a hemato-and molecular pathologist and on provincial committees with Cancer Care Ontario have made him a strong advocate for understanding and incorporating molecular genetic biomarkers into the diagnoses pathologists provide.
Dr. Rutherford received his Doctor of Medicine Degree and training as an Anatomical Pathologist at Queen’s University after which he completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Hematopathology at the University of Chicago. He holds sub-specialty certification in Molecular Genetic Pathology from the American Boards of Pathology and Medical Genetics. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, the College of American Pathologists and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
He obtained his PhD in medical and molecular genetics at the University of Toronto for one of the first papers to identify a STAT (Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription) protein and for initial characterization of the murine flavivirus resistance gene.
